Observation Narrative
This plot documents a luxuriant mesophytic forest in a relatively high-elevation ravine. Soils are evidently deep, dark and fertile (despite very low pH), with high Ca, Mg and Mn levels. Acer saccharum var. saccharum is the most abundant tree of a mixed overstory with Tilia americana var. heterophylla, Fraxinus americana, Quercus rubra and other species. The herb layer is very dense and lush with Deparia acrostichoides and an assortment of forbs such as Caulophyllum thalictroides, Laportea canadensis and Uvularia grandiflora.
Plot located 0.1 mi southeast of the junction of FR 238 and FR 604 between High Knob and Coon Gap on Stone Mountain.
